Truth over lies

Let me tell you story.

Just recently, our team went outside to take a few pictures for the Tattered Tiaras website. My day did not go quite as planned. It was one of those days where I tried on 5 different outfits before I felt comfortable. It was one of those mornings where my hair just wouldn’t cooperate. It was the kind of weather where the wind was blowing fiercely and the misty air makes your hair have a mind of its own.

Can we be honest with each other? It was a day where a loud lie crept in, making me feel not so pretty.

Have you ever had moments where you just don’t feel beautiful?

Me too. Us too.

As I stood outside with my hair in a fierce knot and my mascara smudged from the rain, I realized that I was letting myself listen to the wrong voice. You see, feelings are a beautiful thing. They allow us to connect, to love, to relate, to process, and to empathize. But sometimes, feelings need to take a seat across from us for a one-on-one pep talk.

Feelings are often circumstantial. If someone shows up to our door with a box of a dozen donuts, we are going to feel good. But if someone calls us a name or spreads a false rumour, it's going to sting. Don’t get me wrong, I love the power of feelings and how they can drive us to do courageous acts. But, when our feelings conflict with truth, that’s when we need to take a moment to pause and speak up.

I want to stand with you and help you in those moments where you don’t feel beautiful. The truth is, what makes you beautiful is not found in how you feel. It’s the way you choose to give time to the girl at school who doesn’t have many friends. It’s how you choose to speak words that will build others up instead of tear them down. It’s in the way you get up in the morning and choose to make the most of your day. It’s in the dream in your heart that you’ve chosen to hold on to even when people tell you that you aren’t qualified. It’s found in the moment where your friends succeed, and you choose to celebrate them. It’s in the quietness of your bedroom when you don’t feel beautiful but you speak the truth! It’s found in the beauty of your heart.

Those lies that you’ve been listening to – they don’t deserve your attention. Choose to drown out those lies that you are not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough. Choose to stand up and speak truth, for yourself and for your friends.

So, to my girls out there who may not be “feeling” beautiful, do me a favour. Look yourself in the mirror, stare into those brave eyes and tell yourself that you are valued, loved, and capable.

That is the truth.

Forever Hers,
